 This week we focused on letter I.  We learned the I song, learned about words that start with I, the sound it makes, and practiced printing the letter I.  We engaged in a mini author study with Aaron Reynolds Stories. We read, Creepy Pair Of Underwear, Creepy Carrots and Creepy Crayons. We looked at retelling the story with First, Next, Last. We did a cutting activity for each book.  We continued to look at patterns. We looked at identifying, creating and extending a pattern. We talked about the core of the pattern and labelling a pattern. We made 2 and 3 part patterns such as AB, AAB and ABC patterns. We visited Jen with E- Motions. This week we began to explore our 5 senses.  Using our sense of sight we played a memory game with a partner.  We were given a bag with 6 objects in it and a partner to play with.  One partner hid an object behind their back, then the partner had to use their sense of sight to figure out what object was missing. Using our sense of hearing we played the mystery sound game.  We listened to sounds on the Smartboard and then drew a guess on a whiteboard of what we thought we heard.  We loved trying to guess the sounds we heard - it was much harder than we thought! Using our sense of taste, we taste tested various colours of apples. We watched a video that talked about how our taste buds work. This week we focused on letter A.  We learned the A song, learned about words that start with A, the sound it makes, and practiced printing the letter A.  We continued to explore numbers to 10. We used whiteboards to practice writing the numbers from 1-10.We played a variety of math games using dice to practice counting and subitizing (recognizing a number at a glance).  We read, "10 Black Dots" and made pictures using dots to represent a number.  We started our E-Motion residency. The kindergarten class had 2 sessions with Jen. The residency focuses on movement and expression of our emotions.  Writing Wednesday:  We learned about "swirly printing" as a way to tell our stories.  Children are encouraged to add swirls to their pictures as they tell their story.  Learners are also encouraged to add familiar words to their writing such as their name, mom or dad.  Please see the poster below to refer to the type of writing we will be doing in Kind...

Thank you to all our families who returned their child's show and share bags.  We have begun to share our bags look forward learning more about your child as they share their bag. It will take us a couple of weeks to share our bags.  We have started to learn the alphabet at school.  This week we focussed on letter S.  We learned the S song, learned about words that start with S, the sound it makes, and practiced printing the letter S.  We continued to explore numbers to 10 by exploring numbers 9 and 10.  We used white boards to practice writing the numbers.   We continue to work on building a community in our classroom.  We read "Have you Filled A Bucket Today?" and drew pictures to represent how we can fill someone's bucket.  We read, "Kindness is my Superpower" and talked about ways to spread kindness to others. We had a busy week at school!  We continued to look at shapes. We looked at shapes in our world and found shapes in our classroom.We read, City Shapes and then created our own shape cities in our visual journals.  We learned about colours. We read, "Mix It Up" and talked about primary colours. We experimented with the primary colours paints to see what colours we could make. We used plasticine and mixed the primary colours to make secondary colours. We looked for colours in nature.  We looked at numbers 7, and 8. We used loose parts to create the numbers. We practiced printing the numbers and learned about the different ways to show the numbers in our mathematical thinking.  Wednesday is Writing Wednesday in Kindergarten.  Each Wednesday we write and draw pictures in our personal journals.  This is an opportunity for students to write their stories.  Learners are encouraged to draw detailed pictures using colors that make sense.  We have begun to ...

Thank you to all our Kindergarten friends who ran like Terry.  We learned lots about Terry Fox and his bravery and courage.  Thank you to for all the toonies for Terry that were donated for cancer research. At school we continue to explore the ideas of being kind in Kindergarten.  We listened to stories about how to show kindness towards others.  We drew pictures of how to be kind at school. We continue to work on strengthening our fine motor skills.  We learned the correct way to use scissors.  Ask your child what it means to not have "chicken wings" when cutting.  We snipped paper and used the paper to create our names. We have used loose parts to create our very own self portrait.  We are very happy to see our masterpieces hanging in the hallway. We have continued to explore numbers, working on 6. This week in Kindergarten we continued to focus learning the routines of our classroom.  We have read many stories talking about how we treat each other and our space at school.  AM Kindergarten had their first fire drill practice this week.  Please ask your child the rules for a fire drill. We start our day with arrival centres where we work at tables to complete literacy, math and fine motor tasks. Our favourite part of the day is big centres.  This includes playing at the house centre, lego, dollhouse, painting, dinosaurs and trains.  We are working on sharing materials and cleaning up when we are finished playing. We continue to work on our fine motor skills as we explored the book "Lines that Wiggle".  We drew a variety of lines in our journals and used watercolours to paint our design.  We continued to work on strengthening our fingers as we ripped paper to create the first letter of our name.
