Thursday June 20

This week we focused on Fairy Tales. We read, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Three Little Pigs. We read several versions of the stories. We talked about the characters, setting and the problem in each of the stories. Our learners drew pictures to share about each story in their visual journals. We worked on addition and subtraction to 10 by playing a variety of games.  We did literacy centers and focused on skills such as alphabet recognition, letter and sound matching games, reading 3 letter words (cvc-consonant vowel consonant ), and reading high frequency words (such as you, it, in, is, to, the, that etc.) Upcoming Dates Friday June 21:  PM Kindergarten Field Trip to Butterfield Acres Wednesday June 26: Last Day of Kindergarten- Sports Day and Spirit Day - Wear red and white

Thursday June 13

This week we focused on rhyming and making sentences with rhyming pairs. We drew pictures and wrote a sentence in a Rhyming Book. We read many rhyming stories to support our work with rhyming pairs. We continued to play math games that focused on building number sense. Many of the games focus on adding numbers together,  counting on from the larger number. We continued to work on some of our Coulee School learning through our Senses and drew pictures of items in nature that we saw during our week outdoors.  It was an extremely busy and fun filled week in the Coulee. We want to say a huge thank you to our parent volunteers for joining us. We appreciate it ! This week we worked on rhyming word families. We practice reading and writing the words from the following word families "at", "en", "ig" and "og". We read stories and wrote rhyming words and drew pictures in our visual journals. In math, we played a variety of number games. We continue to work on adding numbers together and counting on from the biggest number. We played a domino game which matched dominos to the numeral, we played addition war and addition Yahtzee. We began to learn about problem solving and looked for clues to tell us if it was an addition or subtraction problem.  We did free choice journals and are working at writing simple sentences to express our ideas. Our learners are encouraged to label their drawing with beginning sounds and we are encouraging them to stretch out the words and write beginning, middle and end sounds in words. Field trip forms for Butterfield Acres were sent home this week.  Please complete the forms and return to school ASAP.  Thank you to all the volunteers who have signed up.  All volunteer spots are now filled. If you are looking to volunteer, please consider signing up for Coulee School the week of June 3-6. Thank you to all the families who attended or will attend (Friday) our Duck Celebration of Learning.  It was wonderful to be able to share our ducks and learning with you all.  The ducks will go back to the farm Saturday morning.  It has been a wonderful experience having them in the classroom and we will miss Oreo, Sunflower and Dottie. We had an exciting week with our ducklings ! AM Kindergarten named our first duckling Oreo and PM Kindergarten named our second duckling Sunflower. We took all names and then drew 4 names which the children then voted on. We spent a lot of time this week, watching the ducklings wander about in the classroom and learn to swim. Thursday we had a third duckling hatch. Mrs. Coulson and Mrs. Mask had to help the little one to get out, and I am happy to say the duckling is thriving :)  This week was all things ducklings. We continued to work in our Duck journals, we did more duck art, finished our plasticine and continued to read about and watch videos about ducks. We worked on our Quack and Count retelling to share with our families at the celebration of learning. We played a variety of subtraction games . Our learning this week was all about Ducks. We continued to candle the eggs every couple of days (shining a light under the egg) to watch the development and growth of the ducks. We have been busy with creating artwork, using plasticine, working in our duck information booklets and reading many non fiction books about ducks. We placed the incubator in lockdown today and hope to see the ducklings start to hatch on Monday.  We read "Quack and Count" which is a story about ducks and adding to 7. We are creating our own Quack and Count story in our class. We created our own painted paper and make ducks to retell the story.  We continued to learn about subtraction and played a variety of games to reinforce our learning.  We continued to look at some high frequency words, we have been practicing the following words the, a, is, it, in, you, can, see, and, the, for, that. Celebration of Learning

Hello Kindergarten Families, You are invited to join us at the school for a celebration of learning.  PM Kindergarten will be inviting parents to join us at 2:00pm on Thursday May 23rd. (2:00pm to 2:50pm) AM Kindergarten will be inviting parents to join us at 11:00am on Friday May 24th. (11:00am to 11:50am) The celebration will start promptly at the time listed. We will start our presentation with a couple of songs and then your child will be the expert and share all of their learning with you.  We will open the door 5 minutes prior to the time listed and the celebration will take place in the Hub (main area) of the school.  We look forward to sharing our learning with you. If you have any other questions, please email your child's teacher.

This week was all about Ducks! We continued to candle the eggs every couple of days (shining a light under the egg) to watch the development and growth of the ducks. Ask your child what they have noticed about the eggs. We have seen that some are developing and some are not.We have been reading many fiction and non fiction stories about Ducks as well as watching videos. We worked on a duck fact card and wrote a fact and drew a picture to go along with our chosen fact. We read "Quack and Count" which is a story about ducks and adding to 7. We are creating our own Quack and Count story in our class. We continued to learn about subtraction and played a variety of games to reinforce our learning. Monday April 22 is Earth Day.  We read "The Earth Book" by Todd Parr and completed a guided drawing of his cover page.  We used watercolor paper and paint to finish our project.  We learned about ways we can help to take care of the Earth.  Please ask your child for some of the ways they can help to take care of of our planet. We continue to be excited about our 8 duck eggs. The eggs are in the incubator set up in our class and will be learning about and watching our eggs over the next couple of weeks to see how the eggs change. We had an exciting week in Kindergarten as we had a special delivery of 8 duck eggs. We have the incubator set up in our class and will be learning about and watching our eggs over the next 3 weeks to see how the eggs change. We will be candelling the eggs every couple of days (shining a light under the egg) to watch the development and growth of the ducks.  We learned about heavy and light this week and used scales to figure out what items are heavy and which are lighter. We sorted items in groups of heavy and light items and arranged them from lightest to heaviest. We focused on the letter Q.  We learned the songs, practiced printing , and drew pictures that start with the letters .We have learned the following letters and letter sounds at school this year and your child should be familiar with them all: S, M, T, I, P, N, D, C, P, O, A, B,G,E,R,H, F, K L ,V, U, J, W, Z & Y. In math, we have been working on making 10. We worked on a math problem about a   grumpy king who had enough money to buy 10 blocks and wanted to know how many towers he could make with his 10 blocks.  The king does not allow us to use the same number for any of the towers.   Each day we worked on solving this problem using blocks .  We read stories and talked about Spring. We have looked at what numbers make 9 through lots of practice with making number pairs.  We have learned to play 3 different math games to help us learn the number pairs.  We like to play Shake and Spill, Memory, and Race to 9. We continued to explore animals and what they do in the winter. We are looking at the animals we saw in the "Loud Winter's Nap" story.  This week, we looked at the beaver and the squirrel. We had a very extremely exciting week at the swimming pool. We are very proud of all our learners who pushed themselves and had fun learning and improving their swimming skills.  We want to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who joined us.
